Explanations

gm. Warlubie, pow. świecki, woj. kujawsko-pomorskie

Originally the village was composed of two settlement: Głowno and Bzowo. The earliest mention concerning Głowno dates from 1246, and the parish was mentioned in 1325. In 1305 Wacław II donated it to Piotr from Nowe together with four villages; then it was transferred to the Teutonic order, what was confirmed later by Wacław II in 1325.
In the 2nd half of the 16th century it was listed as an agricultural village, a royal property in the Pomorskie voivodeship, the Nowski poviat. The inspection of 1565 describes the village grounds as hilly and infertile. The village owned 112 włókas, including 11 sołtys (village leader) włokas, 4 parson włókas and 36 empty włókas in forests and swamps. There were 58 settled włókas with 28 farmers and two innkeepers. In 1625 a smith and a cooper were active in the village; the cooper did not pay the rent, making barrels for the manor (newly built on the place of the one that had burned in 1605). In 1624 a new inn is mentioned. Besides peasants there were 2 wood-distillers and 11 gardeners. From the Bzowski forest a barrel of honey was given. In 1664, 8 farmers lived in the village, harding forced labour with their animals for 4 days a week and one day working on their own field. In the village there were two inns and a third one, called 'Montawska', was near the bridge. Colonists Nicolaus Franc, Dirk Gers and Izaak Greger had, by a separate privilege, 1 1/2 włóka, for which they paid rent. We know about a smith, a taylor named Tybik and a brewer named Witek. In 1720 the village obtained a right from the king August II for 50 years. In the market near Bzowo the citizen Jerzy Bolc lived on 1 włóka, for which he paid a rent; he also paid for the lake. The catch of fish in Montowa lake belonged to him in the summer and to the starosty in the winter.
In the Prussian partition Bzowo found itself in the Świecie powiat, the Kwidzyn District. It belonged to the Evangelic parish in Warlubie. In 1745 the property in Bzowo was given in emphyteusis to colonel Gordon for 40 years, in 1777 for life, and a majorate was established there. In 1739 in village there was a manor, stables, a granary, a brewery, lord's cottages, an inn and a shepherd's cottage. Also the forest called Krusze belonged to the village. In 1880 the manor had 914ha, 30 houses, 377 inhabitants, including 317 Catholics, a steam distillery and a brickyard; the peasant part had 1128 morgas, 39 houses, 308 inhabitants including 280 Catholic. Moreover, the gentry village owned Birkenrode and Chełmińskie Bzowo manors (7 houses, 51 inhabitants including 44 Catholic), as well as a dairy in Bzówek and Krusze.

The village is situated in the north-western part of Nizina Sartwicko-Nowska. The clearway A1 runs through the village on the north-south line. The oldest part of the village is located to the east of the road, on a small lake.

The settlement is composed of several elements grown together; the oldest called Głowno, in shape of an oval village, adjoins at the west the part constituting the proper Bzowo, having the shape of a single-street village. On the south there is irregular development called Podowrze, at east the so-called Ryta Góra. Smaller parts of the village are called Bzowo Brzeziny and Głowinek.

In the village have survived: a late Baroque church of 1768, a manor complex, one wooden homestead and numerous brick houses.
